Avon Lake wins national design award for power plant reuse

State of play: It's one of five projects nationwide to be honored in its category.

Flashback: The power plant was initially built in the 1920s by the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company and closed in 2022.

Reality check: The master plan is conceptual, not a finished product.

• A phased demolition at the site is underway, coordinated by owners Avon Lake Environmental Redevelopment Group (ALERG).

The latest: ALERG told Avon Lake City Council in April that the demolition would be complete and the site fully restored by the end of August.

By the numbers: An estimated 75,000 tons of scrap have been hauled off for recycling to date.

• And 7,400 tons of waste have been delivered to a landfill.

What's next: ALERG and the city are working to attract potential buyers who are interested in developing on the remediated land.
