Cleveland hosts first post-Trump regional gun summit

• That could include the defunding and potential dismantling of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

State of play: Former ATF Director Steve Dettelbach, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson and other Midwest leaders were in attendance at the Madison for the event hosted in partnership with the national nonprofit Everytown for Gun Safety.

What they're saying: "This summit is about collaboration, innovation, and sending a clear message: Our communities deserve action," Mayor Justin Bibb said in a press release.

Zoom in: In a panel about the policy landscape, Bibb and Rep. Shontel Brown (D-Warrensville Heights) spoke about the difficulties of working with Republican lawmakers at the state and federal level.

By the numbers: Bibb said that while homicides have fallen sharply during his administration, 74% of gun deaths in Cleveland are among Black men between the ages of 18-33.

• "That tells me we need a surgical, targeted approach," he said. "The prevention side is just as important as the law enforcement side."

The intrigue: Brown said she is a licensed gun owner and spoke to the factors leading to her decision.

• "I am a single Black woman who lives alone," she said.
• Brown stressed she has no interest in infringing on responsible gun owners' Second Amendment rights, but wants to get assault-style weapons off the streets.

Zoom out: Bibb also noted that Cleveland has set aside $10 million in federal stimulus funds with the Cleveland Foundation to create a "neighborhood safety endowment fund" that would fund violence prevention measures for the next 15 years.
