Cleveland's first dedicated indoor pickleball facility is now open to the public.
Why it matters: The Cleveland Pickleball Center is a $1 million renovation of a long-vacant warehouse in the Bellaire-Puritas neighborhood that underscores the region's steady demand for courts.
What they're saying: "This was a major eyesore," said Cleveland City Councilman Brian Kazy at a ribbon-cutting event Friday.
- "Now it's an asset both for the neighborhood and a destination for visitors."
State of play: The facility includes 10 courts, a private event space, a pro shop and a bar.
- Court rentals are available for nonmembers at $14 per hour.
- Members ($39 per month) can rent courts for $7 per hour.
The intrigue: Rob Euerle, the Parma city councilman and entrepreneur who conceived the facility, had never played a game of pickleball when he undertook the project.
- He secured a $100,000 grant from the city of Cleveland's federal pandemic stimulus funds to help finance the renovation.
Flashback: Last year, the city opened Public Auditorium for pickleball on Tuesday evenings.
