With the calendar flipped to September, Ohioans are gearing up for a busy season of corn mazes, wagon rides and pumpkin patches.
Why it matters: No other Midwestern state loves its fall festivities quite like Ohio, and family farms across the Buckeye State are reaping the benefits.
State of play: Ohio leads the region in agritourism, Ideastream Public Media reports, with nearly 900 farms generating income from activities ranging from berry-picking to petting zoos.
- It's a lucrative, growing industry. The number of agritourism operations in Ohio nearly tripled between 2002 and 2022, and total annual income now exceeds $30 million.
Our suggestions for fall fun ideas:
- The 122-acre fruit farm in Brunswick hosts a series of festivals in its Pumpkin Village each weekend between Sept. 14-15 and Oct. 26-27.
- There are over 20 attractions, including a corn maze, hayride and 300-foot slide.
- The public garden in Kirtland is at most photogenic in the fall.
- The highlight of the Kirtland public garden is the Murch Canopy Walk, a walkway elevated 65 feet above the ground that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding forests.
- Cleveland Metroparks' popular west side spot runs from Rocky River to Berea and is perfect for hiking, biking, bird-watching and fishing.
🚂 Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
- The historic railway will take you through 30,000-plus acres of Cuyahoga Valley National Park and features dinner, drinks and the occasional murder mystery event.
Also, there are loads of fall community festivals in Northeast Ohio:
🎃 HalloWeekends at Cedar Point, Sept. 12 through Nov. 2. Spooky entertainment for kids during the day and adults at night.
🥒 Cleveland Pickle Fest, Sept. 21. All the pickles you can eat on Mall C downtown.
🌾 Harvest Festival at Hale Farm, Oct. 5-6 and 12-13. It's a journey back to the 19th century featuring corn-shucking, pumpkin painting and stories from Johnny Appleseed.
🐶 Spooky Pooch Parade, Oct. 12. Show off your pup in their Halloween costume and win prizes.
