Marvel assembles Russo brothers for next "Avengers" films

Next time the Avengers assemble, it may include a Cleveland directing duo.

Driving the news: Local natives Joe and Anthony Russo are in talks to direct the next two "Avengers" movies, per The Hollywood Reporter.

The intrigue: The Russo brothers directed 2018's "Avengers: Infinity War" and 2019's "Avengers: Endgame," two of the highest-grossing films of all time.

• The duo also directed 2014's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and 2016's "Captain America: Civil War." The former was shot in Cleveland.

State of play: The Marvel Cinematic Universe is looking for stability as it enters its next phase following disappointing releases of "The Marvels" and "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," as well as the delay of reboots such as "The Fantastic Four" and "Blade."

What's next: The next "Avengers" film will be released in May 2026.

• Its follow-up is scheduled for May 2027 and is tentatively titled "Secret Wars," based on a popular 1980s comic-book storyline.
