Kaulig Companies Championship comes to Akron this weekend

• Historically known as the Senior Players Championship, the event has been played at Firestone Country Club since 2019.

Zoom in: This year's contest features a slate of past winners and World Golf Hall of Famers, including Ernie Els, David Duval and José Maria Olazábal.

Between the lines: Wisconsin natives Steve Stricker (who won in 2021 and 2023) and Jerry Kelly (who won in 2020 and 2022) look to continue their Firestone dominance. Either has an opportunity to become the second player ever to win the event three times.

• Bernhard Langer won it in three consecutive years (2014-2016).

Flashback: The Canterbury Country Club in Beachwood hosted the first four editions of the Senior Players Championship (1983-1986).

If you go: The four-day event is packed with entertainment both on and off the golf course and makes for a lively, affordable family outing.

• Expect food trucks, putt-putt, face painting and evening concerts, including country music star Kameron Marlowe on Friday and Youngstown pop-rockers The Vindys on Saturday.
