Cleveland CFO Ahmed Abonamah is stepping down after 2 1/2 years on the job.
The intrigue: Though a city press release announcing his departure hit inboxes Friday with limited details, Abonamah characterized the news to Axios as an "anodyne job change."
- He was offered a "compelling opportunity" and said he felt the time was right for a transition, given his accomplishments and the city's strong financial position.
Flashback: Abonamah, who managed the city's budget and long-term financial planning, was one of Mayor Justin Bibb's very first cabinet-level hires in 2022.
- He spent the previous six years with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
What they're saying: "Ahmed has truly changed the way we manage the city's budget and made long lasting improvements in just two years," Bibb said in a statement.
- "While I am saddened to see him go, I am immensely grateful for his dedication and contributions to our city."
Between the lines: Abonamah said he could not disclose where he is headed next, but confirmed that he will remain in Cleveland and that Bibb was kept in the loop as he made his decision.
Zoom in: In the city release, Abonamah touted Cleveland's consecutive structurally balanced budgets and "record cash reserve levels."
- "The foundation we have built is strong and is in good hands going forward," he said.
What's next: Abonamah's last day will be July 19.
- Jim Hartley, an assistant director in the finance department, will become the interim director.
