Teachers in Ohio made an average of $66,390 during the 2022-23 school year, according to an analysis by the National Education Association.
The state's average teacher salary ranked 19th overall, slightly lower than the previous year's No. 18.
Why it matters: Teacher raises have been a hot topic for Ohio lawmakers in recent legislative sessions, and the analysis shows that most states are increasing teacher pay.
It's also National Teacher Appreciation Week, and a recent report found that Ohio teacher salaries have not kept pace with inflation.
Catch up quick: In October, the legislature raised the starting salary for a teacher with a bachelor's degree to $35,000 from $30,000.
Between the lines: Statehouse Democrats unsuccessfully sought to raise the starting salary to $50,000.
The latest: Rep. Joe Miller, a Democrat from Amherst, last month introduced a bill to raise starting pay for teachers with a bachelor's degree to $50,000.
Reality check: No Republicans are co-sponsoring the legislation, so it doesn't stand much chance in Ohio's lopsided General Assembly.
