Music

Restaurateurs Joe and Katy Kindred are targeting a mid-September opening for Deepwell, their New Orleans-inspired steakhouse in downtown Mooresville.

Why it matters: The Kindreds are behind some of the area's most beloved restaurants, including their namesake Kindred in Davidson.

Driving the news: Axios got a first look inside Deepwell, and a taste of the menu, ahead of its opening at 185 N. Main St.

What to expect: The roughly 4,000-square-foot restaurant takes over a historic Main Street building, with a 1,500-square-foot patio and a 24-seat private dining room with its own bar and wine storage.

An indoor-outdoor bar opens onto the patio and downtown Mooresville's social district. Bar seats and walk-in tables will be first come, first served, while the main dining room will take reservations.

Windows into the restaurant's curing and dry-aging room put its meats and house-made charcuterie on display.

Craig Deihl, the Kindreds' corporate chef, will serve as Deepwell's executive chef and co-owner.

Best bites: Expect dry-aged steaks, wood-fired meats and seafood, charcuterie and Southern dishes with New Orleans influences.

We sampled the smoked redfish dip ($16), pan-seared crab cake ($23), smoked duck gumbo with crawfish and rice ($21), the prime brisket with collard greens and Sea Island red peas ($36), and a prime T-bone ($72).

Sip on this: Cocktails include originals like the Cypress ($14), made with vodka, raspberry shrub, lemon and tarragon, plus classics like a Madeira Cobbler ($13) with peach preserves and lemon.

What we're watching: The team is still working to reopen Kindred, about 15 minutes away in Davidson, after the restaurant closed in May due to a fire. 

Context: Kindred opened in 2015. The couple added Hello, Sailor in 2017 and Albertine in 2024.

They opened their first Milkbread in 2022 and now have several locations.

Joe was born and raised in Charlotte. A James Beard Award semifinalist, he was a chef at Rooster's and Katy was the general manager at Good Food on Montford before they opened their own restaurants. Katy spearheads the restaurant group's design.

Picking the perfect apple is a fall staple, and there are plenty of spots within driving distance from Charlotte where the tradition is already underway.

Why it matters: Here are 10 orchards within two hours of Charlotte where you can pick your own apples, plus one that's still accepting visitors:

This orchard has a cider mill, a country store, educational tours, group tours and a bakery. Stock up on cider and sweets (including apple cider doughnuts) before you leave.

Stop by: 2075 Pleasant Hill Ave., Morganton, N.C.

The bakery and U-pick are open six days a week. Reserve a pass for picking here for $4 per person.

Pick your own apples, pumpkins and muscadines at this second-generation family-owned farm that started in 1982.

Stop by: 6938 Eaglesfield Road, Gibsonville, N.C.

The farm is aiming to open for fall on Saturday, Sept. 12, per its Instagram. Hours will be from 8am-12pm Saturdays.

Their tractor-drawn apple orchard hayrides take you through rows of short apple trees that are easy to pick.

Find over 25 varieties of apples at this farm's U-pick orchard located minutes from downtown historic Hendersonville.

Stop by: 1126 Jeter Mountain Road, Hendersonville, N.C.

Apple picking is open Thursdays—Sundays 10am-5pm. Reserve your time slot here. 

On select Saturdays and Sundays in September, a $19.95 ticket gets you access to the orchard, a bag of U-pick apples, apple and cider tastings, a hayride and a four-ounce apple cider slushy.

Stop by: 506 Parks Crossroads Church Road, Ramseur, N.C.

Apple picking begins Friday, Sept. 11. Reservations are required and you can make them here. There's a tractor playground, jump pad, apple cannon, megaslide and bee train available for an additional cost.

Stop by: 4085 Price Road, Moravian Falls, N.C.

Pick your own apples at this fifth-generation family orchard in Hendersonville, then stick around for apple cider doughnuts, fried apple pies, a taproom and family activities like apple cannons and a cow train.

No reservations are required. Check the orchard's website for the latest U-pick varieties and availability before you go.

Stop by: 187 Garren Road, Hendersonville, N.C. 

Sky Top is a mountaintop orchard where you can pick apples, bring a picnic, meet farm animals and relax with your friends and family. They have tons of apple-related goods — like apple butter, jams, fudge, cider and doughnuts. 

A U-pick bag and entry for up to five people is $30. Check out which varieties are available here.

Stop by: 1193 Pinnacle Mountain Road, Zirconia, N.C.

Make a day of apple picking, hayrides, a corn maze and more — all with beautiful mountain views. You can find a full breakdown of all the apple varieties (and possible uses) here.

Stop by: 170 Stepp Orchard Dr., Hendersonville, N.C.

U-pick is open Friday-Saturday from 9am–6pm, Sundays from 10am-6pm and Monday-Thursday from 9am-5:30pm. Admission is free. 

After you fill your basket, reward yourself with a well-earned flight of hard cider and apple doughnuts.

Reservations are open through Sept. 27 — admission is $7.50 and includes a 1/4 peck bag of apples. 

Of note: The Orchard at Altapass doesn't expect to offer U-pick apples this season after a March freeze damaged much of its crop. They are still accepting visitors. Check the orchard's website for updates in case larger quantities become available.

A new breakfast and lunch pop-up is taking over Cheat's Cheesesteaks on weekends this fall.

Why it matters: Daybreaker is the latest concept from 1957 Hospitality Group, which, in addition to Cheat's, also operates The Crunkleton, Rosemont and Puerta.

What to expect: The limited-time pop-up will serve breakfast and lunch sandwiches, plus coffee and matcha.

Cheat's director of operations Ashley Bayne created the menu, pulling inspiration from flavors she grew up with and dishes she's tried while traveling.

Pizza Baby is supplying the bread, and Javesca Coffee will provide locally roasted coffee.

Best bites: Breakfast sandwiches range from $9-$12, including the $11 Daybreaker with egg soufflé, Vietnamese sausage, garlic mayo, scallion and chili crisp on brioche. 

The $12 Crispy Morning layers egg, Havarti and bacon on a crispy scallion pancake.

The $12 Lincoln pays tribute to Lincoln's Haberdashery's former Mary's Muffin, with egg soufflé, Havarti, ham, heirloom tomato, pickled jalapeño and garlic mayo on a Bianca bun.

Lunch includes the $13 Big Dill chicken salad sandwich, the $14 Emilia with burrata and mortadella, and the $13 Negima with grilled chicken and sweet soy tare.

Sip on this: Matcha flavors include strawberry, blackberry yuzu and an elderflower tonic, to name a few. 

What's next: Daybreaker launches Friday, Sept. 18, at Cheat's, 2137 Hawkins St. 

It'll run Friday-Sunday, 8am-2pm for a limited residency.

Cheat's will continue to serve its menu during normal business hours.

You can take a workout class that feels a little like flying in Concord.

Why it matters: Bungee fitness has become a viral social media workout, and after my friends and I kept seeing it all over our feeds, we found the closest place to Charlotte to try it. 

Context: This is another edition of McKenzie's Moves, where I try fitness classes and wellness experiences around the city. 

Catch up quick: Bungee fitness is a low-impact, high-intensity cardio workout where you're strapped into a harness attached to a bungee cord overhead, allowing you to jump, leap and get some serious air.

Zoom in: That brought us to Get Fit Together, a locally owned women's strength and bungee fitness studio in Concord.

Owner Joy Dry opened the studio in 2022 and has taught fitness since 2008, per Get Fit Together's website. 

In addition to bungee, the studio also offers classes focused on strength and functional training for women.

What to expect: A one-hour bungee fitness class.

Don't let the flying fool you — it's a workout. Be prepared to sweat. My heart rate was up from all the jumping and leaping, even with the bungee taking lots of the impact.

It takes a few minutes to get the hang of it, but you'll be instructed through the class. By the end, we were moving from pushups to burpees to midair high fives.

By the numbers: A drop-in bungee class is $28. Classes are limited, so check the schedule and book ahead.

An unlimited monthly membership to Get Fit Together is $139 and includes other group classes. 

💭 My thought bubble: Go with your friends. Half the fun was laughing together while trying to get the hang of things.

If you go: A portion of the class will be recorded with clips for you to keep.
