It’s the month of Ramadan — a time of prayer, reflection and fasting for Muslims.

Why it matters: During the holy month, Muslims who are able will fast every day from dawn to sunset. Then, they’ll break their fast with an evening meal of halal foods known as iftar.

Driving the news: Ramadan began Feb. 17 and is expected to end Mar. 18 or 19, 2026.

From iftar buffets to fully halal menus, we’ve rounded up nine Ramadan-friendly places to break your fast during the holy month in Charlotte.

Halal is a term to describe what’s permissible under Islamic law. In terms of food and drink, vegan food is almost always considered halal, whereas alcohol and certain meats like pork are not.

Even if you’re not observing Ramadan, this guide can be used to explore some of Charlotte’s Asian and Middle Eastern eateries.

Editor’s note: This isn’t an exhaustive list, and it’s not in any particular order.

This fast-casual Halal restaurant is the team behind the popular Halal food cart in Uptown and has two brick-and-mortar locations, one in MoRa and another in Camp North End.

Stop by: 701 Keswick Ave (Camp North End); 4044 Connection Point Blvd. (MoRa)

Expect modern Mediterranean dishes at this locally owned Halal restaurant in the Arboretum.

If you go: They're offering an Iftar buffet for $35 per person. Reservations are recommended.

A Halal restaurant and lounge in east Charlotte, focused on Yemeni and Middle Eastern cuisine.

Optimist Hall's Botiwalla is known for its Indian street foods like masala smashed potatoes and Gobi 65, plus a range of curry dishes and skewers.

The meats, including lamb and chicken, are halal, according to Botiwalla’s website.

The popular Nashville-style hot chicken chain is certified halal.

Dave’s is known for its combinations of chicken tenders, sliders and fries — and its long lines — so plan your trip accordingly.

Stop by: Dave’s Hot Chicken has four Charlotte-area locations, including Plaza Midwood, University City, Northlake and Rock Hill, South Carolina.

A Charlotte classic, Curry Gate offers a fully halal menu of Indian and Nepalese fare, including curries, biryani, tandoori, samosas and naan.

Stop by: Curry Gate has four Charlotte locations and one in Matthews.

The OG Curry Gate (near Camp North End) is mainly for takeout.

The local halal spot serves authentic Middle Eastern foods, like falafel, shawarma and kabobs.

If you go: La Shish Kabob offers an all-you-can-eat Iftar buffet for $29.99 that’ll run nightly starting at sundown.

Make a reservation by calling the restaurant at (704) 567-7900.

Stop by: La Shish Kabob is located in Sheffield Park at 3117 N Sharon Amity Road.

You’ll find traditional Indian and Pakistani cuisine at this University City restaurant, including clay oven BBQ, rice dishes and nine types of naan.

If you go: Zafran Kabab Palace is celebrating Ramadan with an Iftar and dinner buffet Friday through Sunday, and full menu service Monday through Thursday.

Stop by: 230 E W.T. Harris Blvd. (in McCullough Commons).

Located on Central Avenue in Plaza Midwood, this Middle Eastern restaurant has a menu spanning from hummus plates and baba ganoush to family-style kabab meals.

If you go: Their Iftar buffet is $30 for adults and $15 for kids.

There's also a Jasmine Grill on South Boulevard — the two restaurants share ownership and similar menus, but you'll only find the buffet at Jasmine Grill and Kebab on Central.

Charlotte's Halal scene extends beyond restaurants; it encompasses caterers, grocery stores, and local resources, including:

Halal International: A Middle Eastern grocery store located near La Shish Kabob at 3120 N Sharon Amity Road.

Cedarland Halal Foods: A Halal restaurant with an attached grocery store on Central Avenue.

Zaytuna Halal Market: A Middle Eastern grocery store in University City.

Charlotte Halal Food Guide: An Instagram account that highlights and reviews local Halal restaurants.

Haraz: Apopular Yemeni coffee chain with locations in South End, Plaza Midwood, Ballantyne and University. Events may vary by location — the Ballantyne cafe, in particular, has hosted Ramadan night celebrations.

Lagree, a high-intensity, low-impact strength workout, is gaining traction in Charlotte as more boutique studios open across the city.

Why it matters: The Lagree method, focused on time under tension and slow, controlled movements, helped shape today's trendy reformer workouts (think Solidcore-style classes), but true Lagree is its own patented system, complete with certified instructors and Megaformer machines.

By the numbers: There are now three locally owned, licensed Lagree studios in Charlotte.

I took a class at each one — here's what to know before you go.

Quick note: I'm not ranking these classes by difficulty level. That's subjective and depends on everything from how you slept to what workout you did the day before. 

I will say: All three pushed my limits and left me questioning how my abs could be sore for multiple days or how a 16-count movement could feel like an hour.

 This is simply a breakdown of the stats — including pricing, class length, vibe and logistics — to help you decide which fits your routine.

Schedule: 5:30am-5:30pm weekdays; morning classes on weekends

Grip socks: Required (bring your own or buy them there)

The vibe: Bright and airy. Natural light and wall-to-wall mirrors make it easy to check your form — but so can the instructors, so don't think about slacking.

Parking: 2909 Selwyn Ave. (Selwyn Shops). Free shopping center parking.

Best for: If you want to get in, get it done and get on with your day. Class is a tight 40 minutes.

Schedule: 5:30am-6pm most weekdays; morning classes on weekends

The vibe: Dim lights and high-energy playlists. 

Parking: 1933 E. 7th St. The shared lot fills up quickly in the evenings, so plan ahead. The studio is walkable if you live in Elizabeth, Chantilly or Plaza Midwood.

Best for: Anyone who prioritizes a strong playlist, moody lighting and a neighborhood studio within walking distance.

Strength & Wellness Collective of Charlotte

Unlimited: $274/month (includes access to all class types)

Class length: 45 minutes for standard Lagree method. There's also a recovery Lagree class and a 60-minute hybrid Lagree/floor training class. 

Schedule: Starts at 5:30am weekdays and runs until 5:30–6:30pm;  morning classes on weekends

Grip socks: Required (first-timers get a free pair)

The vibe: Natural light floods the studio. Megaformers are front and center when you walk in. 

What else they offer: Strength training, kickboxing and yoga classes, plus wellness services like nutrition counseling.  

Stop by: 628 W. Morehead St. There's a parking lot, and the studio is walkable from parts of South End and Uptown.

Best for: Someone who wants Lagree plus other methods under one roof.

Drench, a locally owned fitness studio opening this summer in South End, will offer Lagree alongside kettlebell, strength and recovery classes.

Drench, a multi-modality fitness and recovery studio, will open in the heart of South End this summer.

Why it matters: Instead of bouncing between yoga, strength and recovery studios, Drench brings several of Charlotte's most popular workouts under one roof.

The 3,600-square-foot space will offer heated sculpt, kettlebell strength, Lagree and breath-led recovery.  

What to expect: Two studios and four class types.

Sculpt: A heated rhythm-driven yoga and pilates-inspired athletic flow using light to medium weights.

Kettlebell strength: A strength-forward kettlebell training offered in two formats to build muscle and endurance, heated between 75-80 degrees. 

Lagree: A high-intensity, low-impact workout focused on time under tension on Mini Pro machines, which are like reformers.

Mindful recovery: Breathwork, meditation, and stretch classes. 

By the numbers: The heated studio will fit 40 mats. The Lagree studio will have 10 Mini Pros. 

Context: Owners Matthew and Martin MacLean moved to Charlotte from San Francisco in 2019. Both come from group fitness backgrounds and have taught private classes locally.

The idea for Drench grew out of their own routine. As former Equinox members in California, they were used to accessing multiple workout modalities in one place. 

In Charlotte, they found themselves splitting time and memberships across studios and began sketching out a space they'd want to attend themselves.

What they're saying: "As two dads with high-pressure jobs, we knew how fragmented wellness can feel, bouncing between studios and schedules," they tell Axios. "We wanted to bring the formats that inspired us under one roof so life feels a little easier."

The vibe: The studio looks like a luxury wellness hub, with warm neutrals, curved plaster and moody lighting. Expect spa-like touches, too, from a signature scent to cold towels and ice.

Yes, but: The MacLeans say they want Drench to be approachable and community-driven.

Half of late cancellation fees will go to local charities. Teacher and community worker discounts are built in. Anyone who loses their job or faces financial hardship will receive a free month.

"We want people to continue their routine and focus on themselves, especially when it can be hardest," they tell Axios.

What's next: Pop-up classes will take place in South End ahead of the opening.

Pricing hasn't been announced, but the MacLeans say memberships will be competitive.

Founding memberships are expected to launch in April, with a June soft opening and a July grand opening planned.

The big picture: More Charlotte studios are blending formats instead of sticking to just one. 

The Health Club in Oakhurst, The Club in South End, Motion Fitness in SouthPark and Strength and Wellness Collective of Charlotte are all examples of the wellness club model, which combines multiple training styles, and often recovery or coworking, in one space. 

Stop by: Drench will open at 2041 South Blvd. Ste 101 South End, in the same strip as Snooze and Silverlake Ramen.

Big changes are coming to Brevard Court, just in time for soccer season.

Why it matters: Ahead of Charlotte FC's home opener, and the chaos of March Madness and St. Patrick's Day, the team behind Valhalla is opening three new spots in the historic Uptown courtyard.

Driving the news: We toured the spaces this week with co-owner Matt Marena, who says the goal is to have all three open by the first week of March.

What's coming: A bodega bar, a country dive and a glow-up of a longtime lunch favorite. Here's what to know about each.

Spurs Up Saloon (formerly Crafty Beer Guys)

What they're saying: Marena says the goal is for each business to have a distinct look and feel. That's why Crafty Beer Guys was rebranded to Spurs Up — to avoid feeling too similar to its neighboring business, Queen City Bites & Crafts (QCBC).

The vibe: Think ski lodge meets dive bar, with "a splash of Nashville," Marena says.

What to expect: A strong lineup of whiskeys and tequilas, a shooters menu and a canning machine that seals cocktails so customers can enjoy them inside or in the court. 

Food will come from the next-door neighbor, Queen City Bites & Crafts.

Where: 127 Brevard Ct., across from Crisp.

When: Spurs Up is currently in a soft opening. Once fully open, hours will be 3pm–midnight Tuesday through Friday and noon–midnight on weekends. Closed Mondays.

The vibe: A bodega meets a no-frills bar, in, you guessed it, a tiny space.

What to expect: Convenience store-style snacks, drinks and tobacco products (the space was formerly a bodega), plus a liquor selection, a few ready-to-drink cocktails and specials, like $5 Fireball every day.

Alcoholic slushies will roll out once the weather warms up.

Where: 120 Brevard Ct., near the entrance to Latta Arcade.

Stop by: Tiny Bar is also currently in a soft opening. 

Once fully open, hours will be 11:30am-10pm on weekdays and 11:30pm-midnight on weekends. Closed Mondays.

Crisp (Now called Crisp Kitchen and Cocktails)

Catch up quick: Crisp, the popular casual salad spot formerly inside Latta Arcade, is reopening in Brevard Court as Crisp Kitchen and Cocktails.

The vibe: "It's a little nicer, a little lighter, and still feels indulgent," says Marena. The goal is to offer something different from the heavy game-day options that dominate the alley.

What to expect: The to-go salads and wraps Crisp is known for are staying, plus a full cocktail program and a more elevated dinner service in its upstairs dining room. 

Dinner will be shareable, with dishes like meatballs with garlic crostinis, flank steak with chimichurri, and pork belly bao buns.

 Cocktails include 10 highballs made on a Japanese highball machine.

Stop by: 132 Brevard Ct., across from Spurs Up, near the entrance to Latta Arcade.

The opening will roll out in phases. Lunch is aiming to launch the first week of March, with the bar and dinner service to follow. 

Between the lines: Two other Brevard Court businesses are also undergoing changes.

Sonrisa, a Latin American restaurant, is opening in the former Mucha Mucha space.

Across the courtyard, Hooligans, Charlotte's original soccer bar, is renovating its layout ahead of the busy season.
