You don't have to travel to compete in a HYROX-style race. A locally owned Charlotte gym is bringing its own version to Lower South End over Halloween weekend.
Why it matters: As global fitness races like HYROX and DEKA grow in popularity, Sweat Method's new RelayWRK gives locals a chance to test their strength and endurance without leaving town — or going in alone.
What to expect: RelayWRK launches Friday, Oct. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 31.
- The two-person race consists of nine movements across three stations, combining strength training and cardio.
- Partners alternate exercises: one works while the other rests, then they switch.
- It's open to everyone, regardless of gym membership or competitive fitness experience.
- "Every movement is challenging, but no single one is meant to wreck you," Gordon says. "The test is all nine together."
How it works: The race is roughly two-thirds strength training and one-third conditioning, explains Sweat Method owner Justin Gordon. Partners work through three stations:
- Ski station: Over-the-shoulder tosses, plank up-downs and SkiErg.
- Rower station: Stepovers, dumbbell sit-ups and rowing.
- Bike station: Surrender lunges, dumbbell snatches and cycling.
Yes, but: Unlike HYROX, there's no running, and the entire race takes place inside the studio.
The big picture: Gordon says RelayWRK was born out of the wish to measure members' strength and endurance while giving them something to train toward together.
- "Every movement is one our members already train, so it isn't a separate skill you have to learn," Gordon says. "It's a way to see your training working."
- After seeing members take to the format, Gordon decided to open it to the Charlotte community.
If you go: RelayWRK will host two race formats.
- Friday, Oct. 30: RelayWRK Sprint features 20 reps per movement and shorter cardio distances. Races begin at 6pm and 6:45pm. The beginner-friendly race is timed and judged, with no prizes.
- Saturday, Oct. 31: RelayWRK Endurance increases the difficulty to 30 reps per movement and longer cardio distances. Races begin at 9am, 9:45am, 11am and 11:45am. Cash prizes will be awarded in men's, women's and co-ed divisions.

By the numbers: Registration costs $20 per person Friday and $30 per person Saturday.
- Each race is capped at four teams of two.
- Don't have a partner? Sweat Method will pair you with someone.
- Registration is available through the Sweat Method app.
What's next: RelayWRK returns Jan. 8-9, 2027.
