Capital One Café is coming to South End

The South End stretch along Camden Road near South Tryon Street once included Common Market, The Charlotte Post, Elder Gallery of Contemporary Art, Phat Burrito, Black Sheep Skate Shop and Charlotte Art League. Today, it's largely home to chains, with another one on the way.
Driving the news: Capital One has signed a lease for its first Charlotte café, which will be in the former Elder Gallery space.
Why it matters: It's a reflection of the neighborhood's evolution as a whole. South End has transformed from the edge of town to one of the hottest neighborhoods in the nation. It's where major players want a presence, from Lowe's to Capital One.
What to expect: Capital One Café is a mix of a bank-meets-coffee shop. The space will be open to everyone, not just Capital One customers.
- Capital One cardholders receive 50% off handcrafted beverages when paying with their Capital One card.
- The Charlotte café will include seating, free WiFi, California-based Verve Coffee Roasters and food.
- There will also be banking tools and financial workshops.
Zoom out: This will be Capital One's latest foothold in North Carolina.
- Capital One also has a café in Durham and opened a corporate office in Charlotte.
- Plus, Capital One has plans to open a lounge at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
What they're saying: "These investments reflect Capital One's promise to create meaningful experiences for customers in one of the nation's fastest-growing business and banking markets," Jennifer Windbeck, Capital One's head of retail bank channels and operations, said in a statement.
What's next: A timeline for when the Charlotte location at 1520 S Tryon St. will open is TBD, per a Capital One spokesperson.
