A 1949 light blue Ford F3 is popping up around Charlotte — a mobile bookstore called Mood Reader Books.
Why it matters: Bookstores are making a comeback in a myriad of formats from traditional brick and mortar locations to mobile bookstores. The latter offers more flexibility in overhead costs and hours, and meets communities where they are.
The latest: Hannah Emme soft-launched Mood Reader Books in late 2025. She left a career in digital marketing and is a full-time bookshop owner. You'll see her popping up all over town and you can find the truck's full schedule on Instagram.
What to expect: The mobile bookstore is a flatbed truck with shelves. Emme typically stocks around 200 titles per event. They're organized by genre. A large portion of the mobile bookstore's offering is fiction for all ages, with a mix of new and used books, Emme tells Axios.
- She curates the used books section with the intention of providing books in an accessible price range, including some at $6.
- The contents of the truck depends on the event. Some events focus more on children's books, while others may have more romance.
- There's also a "blind date" section where readers can select a book without knowing the author or the title. Instead, they're given the genre and a brief description of the book. Emme says she tries to keep this section of usually 10–15 books focused on local independent authors. It also encourages her visitors not to judge a book by its cover.
- Mood Reader Books also has stickers, totes and other bookish items.
Zoom in: Emme moved to Charlotte in 2013 from Kansas City with her husband. They now have two children, 7-year-old Paisleigh and 2-year-old Callum, and live in south Charlotte.
- She'd been considering the idea of a mobile bookstore for the last five years before ultimately purchasing the truck from someone in their neighborhood.
- Mood Reader Books is the 1949 truck's retirement job, Emme jokes.
The big picture: Charlotte's bookstore community is buzzing, with at least five new bookstores opening in Charlotte since fall 2024.
- Nationwide, independent bookstores are expanding.
- American Booksellers Association, a national trade association supporting independent bookstores, gained more than 500 members over the last year, the Associated Press reported. That brings the organization's total membership to 3,417, the highest it's been since the late 1990s and almost three times higher than it was 10 years ago.
Zoom in: Locally, the Wandering Page, another mobile bookstore, launched around the same time as Mood Reader Books, but it operates out of a trailer.
- Charlotte's beloved romance-only bookstore, Trope Bookshop, launched out of a green bus in 2023 before opening a permanent spot in Plaza Midwood in 2025.
