A DIY woodshop studio has opened in Charlotte's Belmont neighborhood, offering instructor-led classes where participants create custom home décor.
Why it matters: Board & Brush owner Buffy Wilkey hopes the space becomes a "third place" where people can gather, socialize and create outside of bars or restaurants.
- "I think there are always ways to find things to do without just going to bars or spending a lot of money eating out," Wilkey said. "This is a way to express yourself, gather with friends and have a great time."
Zoom in: The studio is located in the Sugar Mill development at 933 Louise Ave., which is quickly becoming a hub for activity-based businesses.
- Nearby spots include BATL Axe Throwing, Doors of Divergence Escape Rooms and Game Show Challenge Charlotte.

How it works: Instructor-led classes run about two and a half to three hours, and you can choose from over 800 unique wood designs to customize.
- Wood projects range from bar trays to porch signs that you'll sand, stain and distress. Eventually, Wilkey wants to add workshops for doormats, etched glass, and totes.
- The 925-square-foot space also features a small bar with beer and wine available for purchase.
- "You don't have to be artistic or super crafty," Wilkey said. "We walk you through everything."

If you go: Classes at Board & Brush can seat about 18 people, so you'll want to book a project at least 48 hours in advance to secure your spot.
- Public workshops run from Wednesday through Sunday. Private workshops can be booked throughout the week.
- Prices range between $40—$80.
Zoom out: The Wisconsin-based chain has locations nationwide. North Carolina now has two studios in Charlotte and Asheville.
What's next: Wilkey aims to expand with additional locations in south Charlotte, Davidson and near Lake Wylie.
