Roots Cafe will open a second location in Madison Park this spring, expanding the South End favorite in two phases.
Why it matters: Roots' South End lease expires in 2027, and owner Craig Barbour has been looking for a more permanent home.
Driving the news: Barbour will debut Roots 2.0 at 5033 South Blvd. in Madison Park.
- Phase 1, targeting a late spring opening, will be a 1,385-square-foot coffee shop with about 30 seats, including traditional tables and soft seating.
- Phase 2, expected in the fall, adds 1,127 square feet for a larger kitchen buildout and expanded seating.
What to expect: Phase 1 will offer coffee from Enderly and pastries, as well as a limited menu of new grab-and-go items.
Flashback: Roots Cafe, owned by Barbour, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner alongside coffee, cocktails, wine and nonalcoholic options at its South End location.
- "Thanks to the new ownership at Madison Corners, we were able to find the perfect fit," Barbour said in a news release.
- As a nearby resident, he added, it's "extra special to create a space for families, like ours, to frequent."
Between the lines: Parking has long been a challenge at the South End location at 2135 Southend Dr.
- The Madison Park location includes a large, free parking lot surrounding the space on two sides.
What's next: The team plans to accept reservations for book clubs, association meetings, showers and other gatherings.
- The cafe will be open seven days a week, with specific hours to be announced.
