A new mile of McAlpine Creek Greenway is now open off Pineville-Matthews Road — a multimillion-dollar project filled with new boardwalks that extends the popular McAlpine/McMullen/Four Mile greenway network.
Why it matters: Greenways give Charlotte residents and visitors more space to explore the outdoors without worrying about dodging traffic, whether that means going for a run or walk, biking or commuting to work.
By the numbers: The project cost was just under $7.9 million, with much of the funding provided by a grant from the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
- Just under $5.8 million came from NCDOT, and the remainder came from Mecklenburg County Capital Plan funding, a county spokesperson tells Axios.
What to expect: The new mile stretch heads north toward Highway 51 (Pineville-Matthews Road) from the existing trailhead parking lot at 11823 Johnston Road (this trailhead includes restrooms).
- It includes one of the county's longest boardwalks — 2,610 linear feet — meaning you're walking above water for much of this area.
- The project includes five total boardwalks.
- A pedestrian bridge spans the greenway and the creek. It connects to a new parking lot at 6810 Pineville-Matthews Road, which is expected to open in early 2026 and accommodate 51 cars.

What's next: While the county's greenway master plan calls for future northern extensions, there are not currently phases that are funded, in design or under construction, a county spokesperson tells Axios. Find more information about the county's greenway master plan here.
- The county does have funding allocated for improvements to the existing McAlpine/McMullen/Four Mile Creek Greenway system. Upgrades may range from repairing or replacing paved greenway sections, bridges, boardwalks, signs or renovating parking and restrooms. Find more information about these projects here.
