Mecklenburg County's new section of trail has the longest bridge in its greenway system

A new section of the Stewart Creek Greenway recently opened in west Charlotte.
Why it matters: Greenways make Charlotte more pedestrian-friendly. They also offer a preferable alternative for cyclists looking to commute to work without having to dodge traffic.
Catch up quick: A 1-mile stretch of greenway called Stewart Creek Tributary 2, between Yellowstone Drive and Lakewood Avenue, opened in west Charlotte last spring.
- Now the trail extends an extra half mile with the addition through Martin Luther King, Jr. Park to Coronet Way and Yellowstone Drive.
By the numbers: The total 1.5-mile section cost $7.5 million ($3.6 million for Stewart Creek Tributary 2 and $3.2 million for the 0.5-mile stretch from State Street to Coronet Way), a county spokesperson confirmed to Axios.
The 1.5-mile section has:
- Two bridges, including an 181-foot bridge, the longest in the county's greenway system. There is roughly 200 feet of boardwalk on either side of the new bridge near State Street.
- There are nine access points total, including two new connections to Martin Luther King, Jr. Park.
- You can park at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park (2600 Ravencroft Dr.), jump on the greenway and see skyline views as you head toward Uptown.
Zoom out: A highly anticipated mile of Little Sugar Creek Greenway between Morehead Street and Freedom Park also reopened earlier this week.
