A short documentary about Charlotte baker and immigrant rights advocate Manolo Betancur will premiere here early next year.
Why it matters: Betancur's east Charlotte bakery became the epicenter for peaceful protests during operation "Charlotte's Web" — putting his advocacy and immigrant-focused mission back in the spotlight.
What's happening: "The Changebaker," a 16-minute film, debuts Jan. 17, 2026, at the newly restored Carolina Theatre.
The film follows Betancur's journey from escaping war in Colombia to building Manolo's Bakery into a community hub and symbol of immigrant resilience.
The event includes live performances plus a conversation with Betancur and director Courtney Dixon.
