Sprouts Farmers Market, the grocer known for its fresh produce and internet viral products, opens at 36th and Tryon streets in NoDa this Friday.
Why it matters: Sprouts fills a gap in a booming neighborhood that's seen a surge of development, including hundreds of new apartments, but has long lacked a central grocery store.
- The closest other options in NoDa are Food Lion and Giant Penny, both on The Plaza.
The intrigue: You won't see conventional brands like Tostitos or Pepsi in a Sprouts — but you will find buzzy products like Khloe Kardashian's protein popcorn, Emma Chamberlain's coffee and Jennifer Garner's organic baby food, plus an array of vitamins, supplements and non-alcoholic drinks.
- Sprouts takes some credit for putting now-mainstream, health-forward products on the map, like Chobani and NutPods.
- The grocer also sells its own private label with about 2,800 items that meet strict ingredient standards, such as containing no preservatives or artificial colors.
By the numbers: Sprouts considers itself a good value for the most innovative products, many of which are organic, plant-based and gluten-free. It's bringing its recently launched rewards program to the NoDa store for members to earn points on purchases.
- Axios toured the store ahead of opening day. A dozen cage-free eggs were priced at $3.99, a pack of turkey slices was $12.99 a pound, and three cans of garbanzo beans were $5.
- Sprouts is also known for its $5 daily sandwich deal and $5 sushi on Wednesdays.
- It also serves in-house, prepared meals, like a penne pesto pasta with chicken for $12.99 a pound.
Zoom out: Americans are feeling the pinch of inflation acutely in the supermarket checkout line. Grocery prices are up 3% over the last year as climate change and other factors weigh on the predictability of food prices, Axios' Josephine Walker reported.
If you go: The Arizona-based chain doesn't provide free single-use plastic bags. Customers should bring reusable bags or expect to purchase one at the store for 10 cents.
- Shoppers will find free parking among 58 spaces on the ground floor of the parking deck.
Fun fact: Sprouts will donate groceries that are no longer fit for sale but are still edible to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.
Between the lines: The NoDa store anchors One NoDa Park, a new mixed-use development by Avery Hall. The building has 383 apartments and is also home to a new Bank of America branch and Meridian Nail Salon (opening soon).
- It's just over 21,000 square feet, which is roughly one-third the size of a typical new Harris Teeter or Publix and smaller than a typical Sprouts.
Flashback: Sprouts entered the Charlotte market in 2018 with a store in Ballantyne, then expanded to Steele Creek in 2023.
Stop by: 110 E. 36th St. Ste. 5, across from Amélie's and down the street from the 36th Street light rail stop.
- Open daily 7am until 10pm.
- Opening weekend, the grocer will celebrate with giveaways and samples. The first 200 in-store shoppers on Friday and Saturday will receive a free reusable bag filled with goodies.
