Charlotte's top grocers are still Walmart and Harris Teeter, both of which remained steady in their market share from 2023 to 2024, per Chain Store Guide, which tracks sales data.
Why it matters: Grocery prices remain high in a post-pandemic world, leaving stores to fight for customers.
By the numbers: Food Lion and Publix saw slight increases to their market share during that period. Food Lion rose from 14.8% to 15%. Publix increased from 10.3% to 10.8%.
Stores like Trader Joe's (three stores) and The Fresh Market (five stores) account for less than 1% of the area's market share and Whole Food's (four stores) accounts for 1.6% of Charlotte's market share.
What we're watching: Publix will open a new store at Clear Creek Crossings (12925 Albemarle Road) on May 28.
