Charlotte Prep prepares to open new $13M building after a devastating fire

Charlotte Preparatory School's new lower school will open later this month.
Why it matters: The south Charlotte private school's new $13 million facility replaces its former lower school, which burned down in June 2023. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Context: Charlotte Prep, which serves 437 pre-k through eighth-grade students, did not miss school days as the fire occurred over summer break. After the fire, summer camps relocated a few weeks later to St. Stephen United Methodist Church.
- The school year started on schedule, in Charlotte Prep's existing facilities. Temporary classrooms and offices were later set up in modular units.
What to expect: The new 24,000-plus-square-foot facility is twice the size of the previous one. The two-story building will include 11 classrooms, each 950 square feet, for kindergarten through fourth grade.
- It will also include a larger cafeteria and collaborative workspaces.
What's next: Charlotte Prep's first day of school is Aug. 20.
What they're saying: "Our new facility is second to none; it demonstrates our commitment to excellence and celebrates our past while preparing our students for the future," Charlotte Prep Head of School Todd Ballaban said in a statement.
