Postpartum retreat in Charlotte to offer all-day care for new mothers

Ziva Postpartum Retreat, an overnight service for postpartum and postnatal care, opens in Uptown on Saturday, Feb. 1.
Why it matters: It's the first retreat in North Carolina to offer around-the-clock postpartum doula care and nursery access for new mothers.
Co-owners Selena Williams and Lauren Hall say they started Ziva to educate new moms while offering support from birth to their six-week check-up and beyond.
- "I didn't really have the village that my mother and grandmother had," Williams said. "It's a huge adjustment from not being a mom to being a mom ... So it would've been awesome to have a doula that I could ask questions to in the middle of the night."
Between the lines: Pregnancy alters a mother's brain and body, making postpartum care essential.
- An estimated 500,000 people are affected by postpartum depression each year, Axios' Tina Reed reports.
How it works: A typical stay with Ziva will include three meals and snacks daily, doula access, a lactation consultant, child care and postpartum classes, plus access to a nursery and a mothers' lounge.
- Whether you're focusing on physical or mental recovery, you can customize your day with classes like baby CPR, guided meditation, or yoga.
- For an additional fee, you can add on services like therapy, belly-binding, massages, manicures and pedicures.
If you go: Ziva recommends booking after reaching 25 weeks of pregnancy. Interested mothers can also call Ziva for a reservation beyond seven days.
- You'll need to make reservations in advance for your stay at Le Méridien in Uptown.
- A three-night stay starts at $1,350 per night; five-night appointments are $1,280 per night; and seven-night stays cost $1,230 per night.
What's next: Ziva also provides mothers with a list of resources — from suggested pediatricians to pelvic floor exercise therapists — for additional support after they leave.
- "My experience as a mom was very lonely so we're hoping new parents get a sense of community here," Hall said.
