Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Monday is not only a day to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It's also the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service.

Here are some events and volunteer opportunities happening over the next few days around Charlotte:

• The MLK Holiday Parade today in Uptown is free and starts at 9am along Tryon Street, beginning at Ninth Street and ending at Brooklyn Village Avenue.
• Visit the Harvey B. Gantt Center on Monday for a free day of activities, including hands-on workshops, exhibit tours and live music.
• The YMCA of Greater Charlotte is hosting its 31st annual MLK holiday celebration on Monday at the Charlotte Convention Center. Doors open at 7:15am.
• Levine Museum of the New South is hosting an event from 10am-2pm on Monday with free activities and live music.
• The City of Charlotte is hosting community cleanups around the city on Monday from 10am-12pm. Find your nearest location.
