Charlotte is a beer lover's paradise with over 40 breweries in city limits, plus dozens more in nearby towns.
Why it matters: From first dates to family reunions, breweries have become community gathering places. But it's not just the ambiance that wins over Charlotteans; it's the good beer.
- Our breweries are celebrated nationally and internationally at major beer competitions like World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival.
We've narrowed down Charlotte's long list of great breweries into what we believe are the very best.
- Our list is a mix of the most prolific and the most underrated breweries, spots that have both excellent beer and good vibes.
- We weighed Untappd scores, Google reviews and our own experiences to create the list.
Sycamore Brewing
Situated on the rail trail inside a shiny 16-story development called The Line, Sycamore may look different than its roots, but it's still one of South End's most popular hangouts.
Why we love it: It's always busy with friends, families, dogs, live music, good food and good beer. Sycamore does it all.
Location: South End, 2151 Hawkins St.

Petty Thieves
Petty Thieves is known for its experimentation and having a smaller brewhouse that allows for a rotation of new brews.
Why we love it: Its space and beers feel different from anything else in Charlotte. Designed like an old cigar lounge, the setting is filled with well-worn leather couches and thrifted finds.
Location: Just north of Uptown, 413 Dalton Ave.

Wooden Robot
This Charlotte standby is both laid-back and lively, depending on the day of the week. No matter what, you'll always feel welcome here.
Why we love it: Wooden Robot is one of the South End brewing pioneers, and it's never wavered on quality. It also holds a special place in the heart of Charlotte's service industry, which turned out to support the brewery after the death of co-founder Dan Wade in February 2024.
Locations: NoDa, 416 E 36th St., and South End, 1440 South Tryon St.
Burial
Burial's been making some of the country's best beers out of Asheville for over a decade, and since 2022, Charlotte's been lucky enough to have these award-winning brews here.
Why we love it: Burial's beers are bold, quirky and complex, just like its Plaza Midwood space.
Location: Plaza Midwood, 1214-1216 Thomas Ave.

NoDa Brewing
NoDa Brewing helped to put Charlotte beer on the map with its popular staples like Jam Session and Hop Drop 'n Roll. The latter is a World Beer Cup Gold Award Winner.
Why we love it: Maybe it's because we've been drinking them for a decade, but NoDa's beers just go down so easily.
Location: NoDa, 2921 North Tryon St.
Olde Mecklenburg Brewery
Before OMB opened in 2007, Charlotte was the largest U.S. city without a brewery. Wild.
Why we love it: It's a quintessential beer garden done right with plentiful outdoor space and traditional German beers across two locations.
Locations: Lower South End, 4150 Yancey Rd., and Ballantyne, 15025 Bowl St.
Salud Cerveceria
Salud Beer Shop's in-house brewery also has some of Charlotte's best pizzas.
Why we love it: Eclectic and artsy, Salud doesn't feel like a brewery, especially not on Latin nights, or by day when the espresso machine is churning out lattes. But then you sip one of their own beers, and you remember just how good that is, too.
Location: NoDa, 3306 North Davidson St.

Resident Culture
Resident Culture's three locations offer completely different vibes, but all serve some of Charlotte's most decorated IPAs.
Why we love it: Resident Culture's South End location transforms into a club on Saturday nights, but its Plaza Midwood location is where I meet my friends with babies on Sundays. And don't forget about its new taproom in 7th Street Public Market, too. Perfect for concerts or sports pre-games.
Locations: Plaza Midwood, 2101 Central Ave.; South End, 332 W Bland St.; and Uptown, 224 E. 7th St.
Birdsong
Charlotte's most sustainable brewery offers a mix of its reliable classics like Rewind Lager and Jalapeño Pale Ale and rotating seasonal options.
Why we love it: What can I say ... I love free peanuts with my beer.
Location: Belmont/Optimist Park, 1016 North Davidson St.

Divine Barrel
One of Charlotte's most underrated breweries, Divine Barrel's beers consistently score high on Untappd (and in my heart).
Why we love it: All the focus is on the beer at Divine Barrel's rustic, airy and unfussy NoDa taproom.
Location: NoDa, 3701 North Davidson St.
Hopfly
The Rocky Mount-founded brewery has one of the highest Untappd ratings in Charlotte.
Why we love it: Hopfly's modernized the old Unknown Brewing space and delivered on both beer quality and ambiance.
Location: South End, 1327 S Mint St.
Heist
Heist's original NoDa location remains temporarily closed after a fire, but its Barrel Arts space near Camp North End is a must-visit.
Why we love it: Heist's Barrel Arts taproom is expansive with a beer garden, event space and pizzeria.
Location: Heist Brewpub in NoDa, 2909 North Davidson St., and Heist Brewery & Barrel Arts, 1064 Woodward Ave.
