Charlotte airport adds bus shuttle lanes to departure level

Starting Wednesday, Nov. 13, Charlotte Douglas International Airport will add three inner roadway lanes on the departure level. The new lanes are for airport shuttle buses carrying passengers to and from onsite parking facilities.
Why it matters: The change, which airport officials expect to help with traffic flow, comes just before the busy Thanksgiving travel season.
The new airport shuttle bus lanes are among several airport projects, along with:
- New curbside signs that designate where the airlines depart from — four will appear on Nov. 13 and four more are expected to open before December.
- The eight upper-level lanes have also been repainted.
Between the lines: Offsite shuttles will continue to drop off and pick up passengers on the arrivals (lower) level.
These upgrades are part of the airport's five-year Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE) project, which also includes:
- Skybridges that opened in July.
- New American Airlines ticket counters opened during the summer and the fall.
- Checkpoint E transitioned to Checkpoint 3 on Oct. 8.
What's next: The airport's checkpoints will ultimately be renamed Checkpoints 1, 2 and 3 and all will have updated technology.
- Checkpoint 2 is under construction and should open in late spring/early summer 2025.
- Airport officials expect TLE to be complete in 2025.
