North Carolinians moving out-of-state tend to stay in the South, per new census data.
Why it matters: While moving overall is at an all-time low, there's been an uptick in state-to-state migration, as Axios' Erica Pandey reports.
How it works: The map above is based on new five-year (2018-2022) state-to-county migration estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey.
The estimates are best understood as a pooled average covering that time frame.
California, Florida, Illinois, New York, Texas and Virginia had the most out-of-state movers during that period.
By the numbers: Here are the top states North Carolinians moved to:
South Carolina: 32,527
Florida: 25,380
Virginia: 24,509
Georgia: 17,387
The bottom line: Most Americans stay close to home — but plenty are still making big moves, whether for a job, an education or family reasons.
