SouthPark is launching an Uber-like service for people to hail free rides

How it works: Riders will call the electric cars through the Freebee app. Drivers will take passengers anywhere in the municipal service district boundaries from 9am to 9pm daily.

• SouthPark Community Partners will spend an estimated $465,000 this fiscal year on the pilot.

Between the lines: Microtransit is among the many recommendations in SouthPark Community Partners' 2035 Vision Plan.

• The plan lists more than six dozen projects, from park renovations to new trails, that could be executed over the next decade.
• All the recommendations total $250 million.

Zoom out: These types of on-demand, shuttle-like services are popping up in other neighborhoods across Charlotte.

• Plaza Midwood Merchants Association ran free rides this summer through the local EV company Jaunt. It's introducing rates as the pilot ends.

• JUMP Transit sells one-way rides for $3 per person in Optimist Park, Villa Heights, NoDa and Howie Acres.
• Charlotte Area Transit System will roll out microtransit in late 2024 or early 2025 in Cornelius, Davidson and Huntersville.

What's next: The "SouthPark Skipper" begins Friday, Nov. 15. SouthPark Community Partners says that provides enough time to work out any kinks before the holidays, a busy time for SouthPark, a retail destination.
