The Wafflery, a fast-casual restaurant specializing in waffles, biscuits and grits, is now open in the former White Duck Taco spot in the Belmont neighborhood.
Why it matters: The new eatery allows owner Matt King to make dishes that his customers often ask for at Mattie's Diner but that he doesn't have the space for.
"We currently don't have space to do waffles and biscuits with our current diner setup."— Matt King, Mattie's Diner owner
Dig in: The Wafflery is the sister restaurant of Mattie's.
- The grits, one of the diner's most popular menu items, will be available at The Wafflery in the form of grits bowls.

The vibe: The new restaurant offers B-Y-O options, with waffles, biscuits and grits as a base.
- Then, you can pick the protein — fried chicken, hot fried chicken, crab cake, shrimp or fruit.
- This is followed by two toppings and a sauce — you can go the savory route (cheese and vegetables) or sweet (fruit).
- Or, you can choose from their signature menu, which will have about five to six pre-selected dishes.
- They'll also serve wine, beer, rosé and other classic breakfast drinks like mimosas.

Flashback: Mattie's Diner was a fixture at the Music Factory for years until its 2015 closure. The popular restaurant reopened in a new spot on The Plaza about two years ago, serving the same meatloaf and milkshakes customers had been clamoring for.

Stop by: The Wafflery is at 1020 E 10th St. in the Belmont neighborhood.
- It's open 7am-3pm daily.
