Incoming 7-story Villa Heights development will add to flourishing retail, parks scene
A team of “urbanist” Charlotte developers have big plans to weave a seven-story, mixed-use building into Villa Height’s hip and relatively new stretch of businesses and parks.
The latest: Space Craft breaks ground on “Oxbow” early this year.
- The apartments and retail building will replace several mostly vacant, one-story structures across from The Degenerate on North Davidson Street. The location is about a block from the 25th Street light rail station.
Why it matters: Space Craft is known for promoting walkability and sustainability. This project incorporates sustainable and natural materials, including a brick facade and cross-laminated timber, operations/strategy director Mohit Shewaramani tells Axios.
Details: Oxbow will include 389 apartments, 11,600 square feet of retail and open space. Construction will span two-plus years.
- Shewaramani says Oxbow will create a “retail passageway,” inviting people in from Cross Charlotte Trail and Cordelia Park. It will build on the budding commercial stretch home to Urban District Market and Seoul Food Meat Co.
What’s next: Space Craft is deeply invested in the Mill District. Construction is ongoing on the second phase of The Joinery, which was one of Charlotte’s first parking-less multi-family housing projects.
- The team also recently completed two more apartment buildings, Millhouse and Inkwell.
