A late-night Yemeni-style coffee shop is now open in Plaza Midwood

Haraz Coffee House, a new Yemeni-style café, recently opened on Central Avenue in Plaza Midwood.

Why it matters: Haraz brings something fresh to Charlotte’s coffee scene with its Yemeni-style coffee, known for its rich flavor profile and infusion of various spices (like ginger, cinnamon and cardamom). Its owners say this is the first Yemeni-style coffee shop top open in the city.

  • Haraz will be a late-night coffee option, with plans to stay open until 11pm seven nights a week.

What to expect: One common Yemeni coffee drink is Harazi Mufawar — coffee served with cream and cardamom.

  • In addition to coffee, Haraz serves teas and pastries.
  • All of the coffee is sourced from Jabal Haraz, a mountainous region of Yemen.

Context: Haraz is a small coffee chain that originated out of Dearborn, Michigan, in 2021. It’s currently franchising and has expanded into states like Texas, California and Kentucky.

  • Plaza Midwood is the café’s first and only location in North Carolina.

We ordered the Turkish coffee pot ($14), iced pistachio latte ($7.85), croissant ($5) and pistachio mosaic cake ($7.50).

You can order a singular cup of coffee, but I suggest getting a pot for the full experience, like the Turkish coffee pictured here. Photo: McKenzie Rankin/Axios Photo: McKenzie Rankin/Axios

Details: Haraz is located at 1204 Central Ave, next to Kouture Nail Bar.

  • Haraz is open Monday-Friday 6am-11pm and Saturday-Sunday 7am-11pm.
