People want Pilates. Specifically, reformer Pilates classes.
Why it matters: Low-impact workouts, like reformer Pilates, are trending big time, offering a joint-friendly way to build strength and stay fit. And Charlotte is seeing a rapid growth of studios to meet the demand.
What to expect: A low-impact, full-body workout that strengthens muscles, particularly the core, on a machine called a "reformer," which uses springs to create resistance.
- And, as a result, those infamous Pilates shakes.
Between the lines: Not all reformer classes look the same. The classical method, for example, adheres firmly to the teachings of founder Joseph Pilates. Contemporary options often incorporate props like resistance bands and balls.
- Then, there are the ultra-popular, high-intensity, and beat-based versions you'll find at studios like Solidcore and Core704, whose workouts are more Pilates-inspired.
What we're watching: The Lagree Method. It's a high-intensity, low-impact workout performed on the "Megaformer" (think Solidcore style), which is gaining popularity in Charlotte.
- Strength + Wellness Collective of Charlotte, which offers Lagree Method classes, recently opened on West Morehead and MPower Fitness is another Lagree in Elizabeth.
We've rounded up over a dozen Charlotte studios where you can experience the reformer Pilates hype firsthand, along with their membership options.

Mat Pilates Classes
My thought bubble: If you want a strengthening, core-focused workout without the price tag of the reformer, mat Pilates is a great option.
- Three of my favorite classes are The Spot Pilates, a pop-up, beat-based pilates class, MOVE Wellness' Power Pilates class at The Music Yard and Arrichion for a (very) heated pilates class.
Yes, and: I'm also looking forward to checking out The Jungle, a cycle and mat Pilates studio coming to west Charlotte this summer. It's the newest project by Liv Morgan, the owner of SkyCycle in Dilworth, and who you can often find teaching MOVE's Power Pilates class.
Editor's note: This story was originally published in December 2022 and updated in January 2026 with new class options.
