Weathered Souls Brewing Co. opened Saturday, Nov. 12, joining the lineup of Charlotte’s 40+ breweries.

Why it matters: This is not a typical Charlotte brewery opening. Weathered Souls will be Charlotte’s first Black-owned brewery in nearly three years. It’s co-owned by Marcus Baskerville, who has a national reputation for his work in diversity and inclusion. He first opened Weathered Souls in San Antonio in 2016.

What to expect: Aside from the obvious (beer), the brewery will have a food menu curated by chef Greg Collier (of Charlotte’s best restaurant Leah & Louise). Their partnership is a no-brainer, as Both Baskerville and Collier are focused on uplifting and highlighting Black excellence.

  • There’ll also be a cocktail bar at the front of the space with a special cocktail menu and seating for about 50 people.
  • Next spring, the front of the brewery will also have a coffee bar serving “Black is Beautiful” coffee, a nod to Baskerville’s Black is Beautiful initiative that swept the country in 2020.

The menu: The kitchen will open in about a month and when it does you can expect “a menu that pairs with beer, rather than on one that soaks up beer,” according to Collier

  • The menu is essentially divided in two: hot and cold.
  • Cold options include salad, oysters, ceviche, cured trout toast and cheese boards.
  • Hot options include sliced beef sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, grit bowls and duck and dumplings.
  • For dessert, they’ll have doughnuts from Beyond Amazing Donuts, which is opening a permanent location in Camp North End next year, and bread pudding.

The drinks: Weathered Souls is known for its barrel-aged stouts and west coast IPAs, of which there’ll be plenty available in bottles, cans and on draft.

  • You can also expect cocktails on draft like the “Chai Me a River,” made with Tito’s vodka, homemade chai tea syrup, fresh pressed blood orange and lemon.

Details: Weathered Souls is located at 255 Clanton Road.

  • It’ll be open Wednesday-Thursday 3-10pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-midnight and Sundays from 12-9pm. It’ll be closed on Monday and Tuesday.

What’s next: The grand opening, which will take place when the kitchen opens, will be filled with events and vendors.

  • Expect custom merchandise made onsite by MacFly Fresh Printing Co., food trucks and barbers from Just For You II from 6-10pm.
  • Baskerville will be hosting a meet-and-greet that morning and a bourbon-tasting event in the evening.
