Sukoshi will not reopen in Uptown post-pandemic

The fast-casual sushi restaurant was open for just as many months as it’s been closed during the pandemic: 16 months open, 16 months closed.
After a long pandemic year, with little foot traffic in Uptown, Sukoshi will not reopen, an Indigo Road Hospitality Group representative confirmed with me late Monday.
Flashback: Sukoshi opened in the Bank of America Plaza building on South Tryon in December 2018. At the time, it was an experiment at the time to see if the group could branch out from traditional restaurants like its popular O-Ku and Oak Steakhouse.
- Sukoshi has since expanded to Atlanta. That location remains open.
By the numbers: The upfit of the nearly 2,000-square-foot grab-and-go space in Charlotte cost $1.5 million, we reported in 2018.

Why it matters: The hospitality industry in Uptown is heavily reliant on business travel and big events, which all but dried up last year. Post-pandemic recovery of center city areas will take time. And as reopening continues, we’ll have wins like La Belle Helene reopening and losses like this one or the EpiCentre’s sad, slow death.

Zoom out: It’s been a busy news week for Indigo Road. A representative also confirmed with Axios Charlotte that Indigo Road will open a mid-century modern lodge in the mountains and a new rooftop restaurant here in Charlotte.
