Hello Thursday.
Andrew Dunn is our new Editor-in-Chief. Andrew is responsible for transitioning Axios Charlotte into the newsroom of the future. No pressure or anything :). Until Tuesday, Andrew was a reporter at The Charlotte Observer. While there, he covered banking and finance for three years, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for one. He was also the Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Tar Heel, one of the nation’s most well-respected college newspapers (2009-10). Sure he’s talented, but more importantly, he’s an outstanding human being.
Andrew allows us to serve you a sharper, more useful daily report.
Why did Andrew choose the Agenda? Read it from him: Why it was time for this journalist to leave the nest [Dunn]. Anyways.

Amanda reviews their Pork Ravioli ($13), Milk Bread ($0), Halibut ($20), Crispy Oysters ($13), Squid Ink Conchiglie ($14; looks really funky), Heirloom Tomatos ($9), Hamachi Poke ($10), Cornmeal Fried Okra ($7), Peach Cobbler ($7), and Farmhouse Cheeses ($4 each). Also, have you heard about their Chef’s Table?
Stop inviting me to breweries: 11 Charlotte wine bars for your whiny no-beer friend [Levans]
I can’t believe Katie doesn’t drink beer. So weird. I’ve only been to two out of these 11 wine bars. I’ve heard good things about Foxcroft Wine Co. and I think they may be my next date night spot. View photos and tips.
How I work – Jennifer Appleby, President & Chief Creative Officer at Wray Ward [Williams]
I bought Jennifer a chicken salad sandwich at the Mayobird and peppered her with work questions. View her iPhone apps, desk and find out what she ate for breakfast. Oh, and she drinks 8-10 cups of coffee a day. Wow.
The best and most famous meal in Charlotte [Williams]
If you only eat one thing in Charlotte, it needs to be the grilled grape salad and fried chicken for Carpe Diem. Let me tell you why.
Learning the art of saying no [Maddrey]
Saying no is hard, but then you realize that unless you prioritize doing the stuff you want to do, you’re living the way other people want you to live. Read this firsthand account.
Adios, La Paz: Restaurant closes after 36 years in Charlotte [Levans]
In 2007, owner Laura Sinclair Manning purchased the restaurant with her husband Ward, who died tragically just four months later in a plane crash near Charlotte. Read her heartfelt goodbye note to her employees.
Belk and Classroom Central deliver supplies to students in high-need schools [Levans]
It’s for the kids! Yesterday volunteers from Belk distributed bags of school supplies to 900 students at Sterling Elementary School.
All 24 public golf courses within 30 miles of Uptown Charlotte [Coyle]
View map, distances, rates and photos. I enjoy Springfield, Ballantyne and Rocky River. I also recently shot an 87, in case you were interested.
TALKING POINTS
Restaurant and bar named Libations is opening this Friday inside the DoubleTree near Johnson and Wales [Thomas/CBJ]. 3rd Ward residents, business travels and students should enjoy this. I’m oddly obsessed with hotel bars.
According to the Observer, Lenny Boy produces 4,000 gallons of kombucha per month, 2,000 gallons of beer per month and will generate $600,000 in revenue in 2015 [Solender/Observer]. Read the full story on founder/owner Townes Mozer (27) and why he only takes less than a $30,000/yr salary (outstanding read). I’m fascinated by the economics behind local breweries because with all the fixed costs, it’s difficult for me to tell how profitable our breweries really are.
Construction is being finalized at the CHOPT (salad concept) coming to Park Road Shopping Center and they should open within the next 30 days [Agenda/Insta]. If you’re a CHOPT newbie, their corporate fat cats told me to tell you “We have a list of ‘first time favorites’ for new Chop’t customers which includes our Santa Fe, Mexican Caesar and Mexicali Vegan salads.”
Have a relaxing Thursday and if you’re planning your weekend, view the Agenda PLANNER for 19 things you should do in Charlotte. Live local.
