Texans for Greg Abbott raised more than $20 million from July 1 to Sept. 24 — and spent nearly $70 million during that period, per state campaign finance reports filed Monday.

The campaign finished the period with $17.3 million on hand for the final 30 days of the race.

Why it matters: Money pays for ads as candidates try to make their case — or disparage their opponent — as the contest rushes to its finish.

Follow the money: State Rep. Gina Hinojosa (D-Austin) raised $13.3 million over the same period — and spent $12.1 million as she races to introduce herself to voters.

Her campaign goes into the last month of the race with $4 million on hand.

Between the lines: Among Abbott's chief donors in the latest period is Joe Gebbia, a cofounder of Airbnb who lives in Westlake and contributed $1 million in September.

Hinojosa's single largest individual campaign contributor was philanthropist Greg Wooldridge, also of Westlake, who contributed nearly $210,000 to her campaign. She also received $250,000 from the American Federation of Teachers.

What's next: Early voting begins Oct. 19. Election Day is Nov. 3.
