Travis Heights Elementary suffered flood damage during a roof replacement, and will be temporarily closed ahead of the new school year.
Why it matters: Classes are set to begin Tuesday, and hundreds of students will have to instead start their new school year at another elementary school.
What happened: The school was undergoing a roof replacement, paid for through a 2022 bond program.
"Unfortunately, our contractor failed to establish a water tight seal as work progressed and between construction shifts," AISD operations officer Jaime Miller wrote to Travis Heights families on Wednesday. "This led to flooding and water damage throughout one of our campus buildings."
The flooding damaged teacher and school materials, including books, and has required further roof repairs, Miller wrote.
What they're saying: "We anticipate students will be able to return to the Travis Heights campus within a few weeks, once the necessary repairs and restoration work are complete to safely welcome students and staff back," Miller wrote.
What's next: For now, Travis Heights students will take classes (and breakfast and lunch and after-school activities) at Dawson Elementary, about 2 miles away.
