The city of Austin this week closed St. John Pocket Park in northeast Austin — and it won't reopen for roughly two years.
What's happening: The city has partnered with the Housing Authority of the city of Austin and real estate firm Greystar to redevelop 19 acres of adjacent vacant land into a mixed‑use, mixed‑income development.
As part of the collaboration, the park, near the intersection of I-35 and U.S> 183, will expand from 0.79 acres to approximately 4 acres.
The expanded park will feature new amenities including a splash pad, walking trails, a pavilion, and public art.
The bottom line: Austin officialstell Axios that as part of the collaboration no city money will be used in the project.
