Austin police said a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old were in custody after a string of 12 shootings this weekend, while a third suspect remained at large in the Manor area on Sunday night.
Driving the news: At least four people were shot. One suffered serious injuries, and the others sustained minor injuries, police said.
- Residents in a large swath of South Austin were ordered to shelter in place for about an hour on Sunday afternoon as police searched for the suspects.
The latest: The two teenage suspects used stolen guns and stole four vehicles over the course of 24 hours, Austin police Chief Lisa Davis said during a Sunday evening briefing.
- From around 3:45pm Saturday until late Sunday afternoon, police received 20 calls related to the two suspects, who fired their weapons toward apartment buildings, homes, people standing in front of stores, and at a man walking his dog, according to Davis.
- The suspects also shot at two fire stations — Station 26 in East Austin around 9pm Saturday and Station 32 in Southwest Austin around 10:50am Sunday, Davis said. No injuries were reported at either station.
- Davis said the two suspects would be placed in juvenile detention.
What they're saying: "We don't have any specific motives that have been identified," Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said.
- "These are dangerous kids, out causing havoc in this city," Davis told reporters Sunday. "They had to be taken into custody, and they were — safely," Davis said.
Zoom in: Austin police issued a shelter-in-place order from roughly 3:30-4:30pm on Sunday for residents in an area roughly bounded by Ben White Boulevard, Slaughter Lane, McKinney Falls Parkway and Escarpment Boulevard.
- The search came to an end when Manor police and officers from other agencies stopped one of the stolen vehicles, police said.
- Three suspects ran from the car. Police said two of them were seen in video footage tied to the shooting incidents around the city and were later captured by law enforcement.
- It's unclear how the third suspect, who escaped on foot, was involved in the shootings, Davis said.
What's next: Manor residents were under a shelter-in-place order until just before 8pm Sunday.
- The suspect was still at large as of 8:30pm Sunday.
- Manor police asked residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity.
