James Beard announces semifinalists

Nine Austin chefs and restaurants are semifinalists for the 2025 James Beard Awards.

Why it matters: The Beards are like the Oscars for the American hospitality industry, and even making the semis is a big deal.

State of play: Austin chefs, bartenders and restaurateurs scooped up semifinalist spots in some of the most hyped national categories, including:

• Mercado Sin Nombre for Outstanding Bakery
• Barley Swine for Outstanding Hospitality
• Kalimotxo for Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program

Este's Celia Pellegrini was nominated in the outstanding professional in beverage service category.

Five Austin chefs made the semifinalist list in the Best Texas Chef category.

• Ali Clem, La Barbecue
• Bob Somsith, Lao'd Bar

Flashback: Birdie's co-owner and wine pro Arjav Ezekiel was the only Austin restaurateur to take home the prestigious award last year, winning in the new Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service category.

What's next: Finalists will be announced on March 31, and winners will be celebrated at a Chicago ceremony on June 15.
