Former UT and Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick "DJ" Johnson has released his debut children's book, "Super DJ Saves Field Day," co-written with his wife, Brittni.
State of play: The book, which published this month, follows Super DJ, a dad-turned-superhero who helps kids overcome challenges and find their own super powers.
Super DJ helps kids through embarrassment, bullying and anxiety.
What they're saying: Johnson, a father of six, says he co-wrote the book with his wife to continue their focus on literacy equity.
"The road to becoming a professional athlete was paved by people who helped me believe in myself and my ability to do hard things," Johnson said in a statement. "Every child deserves someone who helps them believe in themselves—and that's what we hope this story does."
Between the lines: Johnson founded the nonprofit Defend the Dream Foundation in 2012 to transform elementary school libraries and unused classrooms into "DJ's Discovery Dens," filled with thousands of books in schools across Texas and Kansas City.
What's next: You can hear the book read by Johnson at his University Co-op signing tomorrow 11am-noon.
