Austin FC signs striker Brandon Vázquez to record contract

• The Verde and Black scored just 39 goals last season, the lowest in the Western Conference.

Catch up quick: After missing the playoffs for the second straight season, team leadership fired coach Josh Wolff and hired Nico Estévez, who had previously coached at FC Dallas.

The big picture: Vázquez, 26, played last season for CF Monterrey, where he scored 14 goals.

• He previously starred for FC Cincinnati, helping lead the team to the Supporters' Shield, or best regular-season record, in 2023.
• He's played in 11 games for the U.S. Men's National Team, scoring four times.

Follow the money: Vázquez signed a four-year guaranteed contract for a $10 million fee, according to multiple reports. The previous team record was $7 million for winger Osman Bukari last summer.

The intrigue: Sebastián Driussi, who scored a club-record 45 goals over three and a half seasons, is reportedly looking to return to River Plate in Argentina.

State of play: Austin FC has also signed Spanish midfielder Ilie Sánchez to a one-year contract.

• If Driussi leaves, look for the team to make at least one more major signing this winter.
