Running statewide in Texas — and buying ads in the major media markets of Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin and San Antonio, not to mention cities like Amarillo, El Paso and Tyler — requires a lot of burger money.
By the numbers: With the combined amount spent by incumbent U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and Democratic challenger U.S. Rep. Colin Allred — and the outside groups that support them — you could place nearly 25 million orders for Double Meat Whataburgers.
- More than $165 million was spent on the race, per AdImpact, with about $100 million of that spending coming from the campaigns of the candidates themselves.
- The rest was spent by groups like Truth and Courage PAC (more than $20 million on behalf of Cruz) and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (more than $16 million for Allred).
Between the buns: The Double Meat features two 5-inch patties, tomato, lettuce, diced onions and mustard. The 835-calorie sandwich will set you back roughly $6.79, depending on location.
What they're saying: "This burger is not just about size; it's about quality and flavor that make each bite memorable," per Whataburger-menu-prices.com, a site that delves into Whataburger menu items.
The bottom line: The most expensive Senate race in the nation this year could have been delicious.
