Texas was one of seven states with less than 60% of its adults registered to vote as of November 2022, according to the census.
Why it matters: Fewer people voting means fewer people making decisions that affect everyone in the state.
Driving the news: Texans can cast early votes through Friday — or vote on Election Day, Nov. 5.
By the numbers: About 56.3% of adults in Texas were registered to vote in 2022, and 40.5% of adults voted in the November 2022 election, which included the governor's race.
The only states with lower voter turnouts were Indiana and West Virginia.
Of note: The turnout of registered voters — as opposed to all adults — in Texas in 2022 was 45.7%.
Yes, but: Turnout in Travis County in 2022 was 52% — and the percentage of Travis County residents registered to vote is typically higher than 90%.
What we're watching: Presidential election years generally see higher voter turnouts, and early voting is in full swing in Texas. We'll see after Election Day how many Texans cast a ballot in this election.
