Joggers, walkers and cyclists can now safely get from Austin to Manor with the completion of a 2.9-mile segment of the 5.5-mile trail.
Why it matters: The new 12-foot-wide paved trail connects Austin to the fast-growing suburb, which saw its population jump 187% from 2010 to 2019.
- The trail offers a safer and quieter option for commuters, allowing them to avoid the existing shoulder lane on Decker Lane.
Driving the news: City officials will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9am tomorrow at Ben E. Fisher Park to celebrate its completion.
Zoom in: The trail connects to the Southern Walnut Creek Trail at Daffan Lane, winds through the Decker Tallgrass Prairie Preserve and ends near Ben E. Fisher Park in Manor.
Between the lines: The first portion of the trail — from Daffan Lane to Lindell Lane — opened in fall 2014.
- The latest 2.9-mile segment cost $8.31 million, covered by money from a $3.77 million federal grant, $3.27 million in voter-approved mobility bonds and $1.27 million from the Travis County Interlocal Agreement, KUT reported.
What's next: The trail will run parallel to Project Connect's future Green Line, although it could be years, if ever, before the 25-mile light-rail extensions to Manor and Elgin are completed.
