Tragic details emerged Wednesday about some of the victims of what police describe as a shooting rampage that stretched from near San Antonio to Austin.
- The attacks Tuesday left six people dead, two police officers and a bicyclist wounded and communities in shock.
The big picture: Police said they did not realize the crimes were connected until the final shooting.
What's happening: Shane James Jr., a 34-year-old from San Antonio, was charged with capital murder.
The timeline: James' parents were shot and killed in their northeastern Bexar County home late Monday or early Tuesday, authorities said.
- About 10:40am Tuesday, an Austin ISD police officer was shot near Northeast Early College High School, per Austin police.
- About noon, several people called 911 for help on Shadywood Drive, about 10 miles from the school, in South Austin. A man and a woman had been shot and both died from their injuries, according to Austin police.
- At about 5pm, a cyclist called 911 and said he had been shot at 5701 W. Slaughter Lane, near MoPac, police say.
- At 6:48pm, Austin 911 received a call reporting a burglary on Austral Loop in the Circle C neighborhood. A responding APD officer discovered the suspect, later identified as James, in the home's backyard. Police said the suspect shot the officer multiple times and then fled in a vehicle.
- James was then pursued by police until he crashed at the intersection of Texas 45 and FM 1826 and was arrested.
When officers entered the home on Austral Loop, they found two people dead.
What they're saying: "We came here asking for refuge in this country," Filomena Caal Pop, the sister-in-law of Pop Ba, a 32-year-old Guatemalan refugee who had a wife and three children and was killed on Shadywood, told the Austin American-Statesman.
- "But these times have changed so much. People have lost the humanity in their hearts. Can you imagine doing this to a working man, a man who didn't make trouble with anyone?"
- Sabrina Rahman, 24, who moved into the neighborhood the day before, her uncle told the Statesman, was killed nearby as she pushed her baby in a stroller.
Zoom in: James served as an infantry officer in the Army stationed at Fort Cavazos, from February 2013 to August 2015. Army officials wouldn't discuss why he left the service, but Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said that James was discharged due to a domestic violence incident, citing military paperwork.
- Last year, he was jailed after being accused of assaulting his parents and a sibling.
- And in August this year sheriff's deputies were summoned to James' family's Bexar County home on a mental health call.
Between the lines: A criminal justice reform group that helped James post bail last year said it was reviewing its policies.
- "The events that have unfolded are devastating and we recognize the pain and suffering this incident has caused," officials with the Texas Organizing Project said in a statement. "We take our responsibilities seriously and acknowledge that we must address both the immediate impact of his tragedy and the broader implications of our bail program."
The bottom line: Austin police on Wednesday addressed questions about whether information about the suspect could have been shared earlier.
- "These incidents did not take place in one specific area of Austin, and the initial evidence we had did not show any similarities," police officials said in a statement. "The Austin Police Department takes the safety of our community seriously, but we must do our due diligence to ensure the information we share is done in a timely and accurate manner."
What's next: Police as of late Wednesday night had not yet released information about the victims on Austral Loop.
