Protesters in Tokyo call for the Olympic Games to be canceled, May 17. Photo: Stanislav Kogiku/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images)

The Tokyo Medical Practitioners Association — a group of about 6,000 doctors — has called for the 2021 Olympic Games to be canceled due to an upsurge of COVID-19 cases in Japan.

Why it matters: Rising case numbers in Japan are a reminder that the pandemic is not over even as cases, hospitalizations and deaths fall in the United States.

  • The physicians' group said Japan's health system would not be able to accommodate the international teams' possible medical needs, per the Washington Post.

What they're saying: “We strongly request that the authorities convince the [International Olympic Committee] that holding the Olympics is difficult and obtain its decision to cancel the Games,” the association said in its statement, per the Post.

  • It added that Tokyo hospitals “have their hands full and have almost no spare capacity."

The big picture: The Tokyo Summer Games — presently 66 days away — were postponed last year due to the pandemic.

Cyclist Shawn Morelli won Team USA's first Tokyo Paralympic Games medal in Japan, when she snatched silver in the women's C4 3000-meter individual pursuit on Wednesday.

The big picture: It was a third Paralympics medal for Morelli, who won two golds at the 2016 Rio Games. Australia's Emily Petricola won the gold medal and Canada's Keely Shaw bronze in Wednesday's race.

U.S. COVID hospitalizations top 100,000 for first time since January

More than 100,000 Americans are now in the hospital with COVID-19.

Why it matters: It's the first time since January that coronavirus infections have surpassed 100,000. Hospitals and state health officials say the spike is driven by unvaccinated adults nationwide.

Transplants rebound from COVID lull

Expand chart
Data: United Network for Organ Sharing; Chart: Baidi Wang/Axios

More than 41,000 Americans underwent an organ transplant in 2021, a new record and a 6% increase from 2020, when the pandemic caused a slight slowdown of the life-saving procedures.

Why it matters: There are more transplant patients than ever, and they are particularly vulnerable to the worst effects of COVID because of their compromised immune systems — although vaccines provide important protection.
