Facebook and Google, which together drive the majority of web traffic on the internet, send traffic to different topics, research from digital analytics company Parse.ly shows. Facebook overwhelmingly drives lifestyle and entertainment news traffic, while Google largely drives business, tech and sports news traffic. When it comes to politics, Facebook is more likely to refer readers to presidential political stories, while Google is more likely to refer to stories about state and local politics.

Why it matters: The combined size of Google and Facebook make it nearly impossible for web publishers to reach an audience without their help. But even though they rely on them for traffic, publishers research from Digital Content Next, the trade association that represents premium publishers, finds that platforms drive just 14% of revenue.

Who are the "other" referrers? Parse.ly actively tracks news referrals in a daily-updated referral dashboard. These publishers tend to drive the most traffic to news sites on a daily basis:

Andrew Cuomo refuses to resign: "I never touched anyone inappropriately"

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Tuesday that he will not resign from his post, despite an independent investigation finding that he sexually harassed multiple women in violation of federal and state law.

Why it matters: Cuomo had previously urged those calling for his resignation — including nearly every prominent New York Democrat — to wait for the results of the investigation overseen by New York Attorney General Letitia James. The findings were damning, but Cuomo said he is not going anywhere.

New York City to require vaccination proof for indoor activities

New York City will require proof of vaccination to participate in indoor activities, including visiting gyms and restaurants, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Tuesday.

Why it matters: The mandate is the first of its kind for a major U.S. city, according to de Blasio. France and Italy announced similar requirements last month.

Exclusive: Facebook's first-ever paid movie premiere

For the first time ever, a film distributor will use Facebook to debut a movie exclusively via a ticketed live event, executives tell Axios.

Driving the news: "The Outsider," a controversial documentary about the construction of the 9/11 Museum in Manhattan, will premiere publicly on Facebook for $3.99 on Aug. 19.
