Elizabeth Warren introduces bill to cancel $640B of student debt

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) introduced a bill Tuesday that would cancel $640 billion of student loan debt.

The big picture: Warren announced in April the plan to eliminate federal and private student loan debt for more than 75% of the 45 million Americans who hold loans (read a full overview of the plan here). She introduced the Student Loan Debt Relief Act with House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), who's sponsoring a companion measure, per Politico.

Trump signs memo to cancel disabled veterans' student loan debt

President Trump signed an executive order Wednesday that cancels the student loan debt of permanently disabled U.S. military veterans.

Why it matters: More than 25,000 disabled veterans will have their student debt forgiven as a result of the memorandum, according to the Trump administration. Per Fox News, it means eligible veterans won't have to pay federal income tax on the loans.

  • Trump's Education Secretary Betsy DeVos had for months resisted such action, even in the face of calls from a large bipartisan group of state attorneys general.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren's (D-Mass.) introduced the newest of her 2020 policy plans focused on helping Native Americans and protecting tribal rights.

The big picture: Warren's plan aims to bring Native American issues into focus "after months of largely refraining from doing so in the wake of a controversy over her ancestry," says the New York Times. It also comes days before she is expected to appear at a presidential forum on Native American issues in Sioux City, Iowa.
