Screengrab: Vault by CNN

CNN on Wednesday announced the cable news channel would sell "moments" from its television archives as non-fungible tokens.

Why it matters: NFTs have enabled people to become owners of unique digital property, allowing content creators to rake in fortunes.

Details: The NFTs will be housed on Vault by CNN.

  • "The initial launch will include six weekly drops of Moments, starting in late June 2021," the company said.
  • "Offerings will include key historical moments organized around specific themes including early CNN exclusives, world history, and Presidential Elections."

State of play: Other media companies have already ventured into the space including The New York Times, Time and Playboy.

Our thought bubble, via Axios' Sara Fischer: I think, in the short-term there are ways to make money off of moments, IP or ideas. There are experiences that connect creators with audiences and have short-term upside.

  • It makes sense that anyone would want to experiment with NFTs, especially a media company that sits in lots of significant IP.

Why it matters: The attention economy shifted significantly during the pandemic towards individual creators who make content for niche groups of fans. Now that brands and consumers are catching on, Big Tech firms want in.

Unvaccinated athletes face 21-day quarantine at Beijing Olympics

Athletes, staff members and journalists at the 2022 Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games who have not been vaccinated against the coronavirus will be required to quarantine for three weeks, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) outlined in its newly-published "playbooks."

Why it matters: The quarantine period is longer than the Games themselves, meaning vaccinations or an earlier arrival date will be required to participate in or cover the Games.

FTX CEO predicts more U.S. crypto flight

Photo: "Axios on HBO"

FTX doesn't look much like a company valued at $25 billion. Its new headquarters, located in a sleepy part of The Bahamas, is so nondescript as to not even have a sign. But it does expect to soon have neighbors.

Driving the news: Founder and CEO Sam Bankman-Fried tells "Axios on HBO" to expect "more and more crypto flight from the states" if the U.S. doesn't soon create a regulatory regime for cryptocurrencies.
