Protestors in support of former President Donald Trump gather outside Veterans Memorial Coliseum where ballots from the 2020 general election wait to be counted on May 1 in Phoenix, Arizona. Photo: Courtney Pedroza for The Washington Post via Getty Images

Ahead of Donald Trump's visit to Phoenix on Saturday, Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs urged the former president to "accept" his loss in last year's election and "move on."

Why it matters: Trump has falsely claimed the 2020 election was "rigged" and Republicans have urged ballot audits in places like Republican-dominated Maricopa County, despite official evidence showing otherwise.

What she's saying: "It is dangerous," said Hobbs, a Democrat, when asked by CNN's Jim Acosta on Friday about Trump's upcoming visit.

  • "The bottom line is it doesn't matter what he says or does, nothing is going to change the outcome of the 2020 election. But it also doesn't change how dangerous this is," she added.

Driving the news: Trump will be speaking at the Arizona Federal Theatre in Phoenix in what has been dubbed a “Protect Our Elections” event.

GOP senator smacks Trump

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) told “Axios on HBO” he’s not sure former President Donald Trump would win the Republican nomination if he ran in 2024 — a rare voice of criticism from within the party.

  • When I raised the conventional wisdom that Trump would be expected to win the nomination, Cassidy jumped in.“
  • I don't know that,” the senator said during our interview in Chalmette, La.

Pennsylvania voter registration deadline arrives

Monday marks the last day to register to vote for the Nov. 2 election.

State of play: Elections for state and local judges will dominate next month's ballot.

  • Voters will choose a new justice on the state Supreme Court, which is currently made up of five Democrats and two Republicans. A Republican judge on the state's highest court is retiring.
  • Judges for Superior, Commonwealth, Common Pleas and Municipal courts are also on the ballot.

What else: District Attorney Larry Krasner, a Democrat who's seeking reelection, is facing Republican Charles Peruto.

  • City Controller Rebecca Rhynhart, a Democrat incumbent, has no challenger.
  • Four ballot questions, which you can find here, will also be asked of voters.

What they're saying: David Thornburgh, CEO of the nonpartisan government watchdog group Committee of Seventy, told Axios that in recent years, people have been reminded of how important the state Supreme Court is.

  • The state's highest court notably tossed out gerrymandered congressional maps in 2018, and it has decided several issues around pandemic restrictions, Thornburgh said.

Voter turnout is historically low for municipal elections.

  • For this year's primary, turnout was 21%, a drop from roughly 66% in the 2020 presidential election.

Yes, but: Thornburgh said mail-in ballots could help boost turnout.

  • "Extraordinary turnout last year. Folks that hadn't voted in a while showed up to vote, and this [election] will be some test whether they're only going to show up once every four years," he said.

The city will provide 16 dropboxes for voters to cast mail-in and absentee ballots.

  • Mail-in ballots must be received by 8pm on Election Day.

Trump sues National Archives, Jan. 6 committee to block records request

Photo: Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images

Former President Trump filed a lawsuit Monday seeking to block the National Archives from releasing White House records to the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, citing executive privilege.

Why it matters: It's the latest escalation in Trump's campaign to disrupt the committee's sweeping probe into the circumstances surrounding Jan. 6, including his actions and communications leading up to the Capitol attack.
