Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones is liable for damages in a lawsuit brought by families of Sandy Hook shooting victims after he falsely claimed the attack was a hoax, a Connecticut judge ruled Monday.

Why it matters: This is Jones' latest defeat in defamation lawsuits related to his conspiracy theories about the 2012 mass shooting.

Driving the news: Judge Barbara Bellis ruled that Jones was liable by default for failing to "produce critical material information that the plaintiffs needed to prove their claims," AP reports.

  • Lawyers for the Sandy Hook families had requested internal documents that would show if Jones had profited from talking about the school shooting and other mass shootings, per AP.
  • Last month, a Texas judge issued a similar ruling in three defamation lawsuits stemming from Jones' unsubstantiated conspiracy theories.

What they're saying: "Their pattern of defying and ignoring court orders to produce responsive information is well established," lawyers for the family wrote in a court brief obtained by AP.

Flashback: After the shooting killed 26 people, 20 of whom were young children, Jones caught backlash as he began to call the shooting a "false flag" operation planned by "crisis actors," Axios' Shawna Chen writes.

What to watch: Bellis ordered a hearing to determine how much Jones should pay the families in damages.

The Wall Street Journal and its parent company Dow Jones are making big changes to its polling strategy ahead of the midterms, executives tell Axios.

Why it matters: The company had partnered with NBC News for the past three decades on polling. Now, it's launching a new polling operation without media partners and it's bringing on campaign experts to help, the Journal’s executive Washington editor Jerry Seib told Axios.

California father and son accused of "reckless arson" in Calder Fire

California officials said they arrested a father and son Wednesday on suspicion of starting the Caldor Fire, which threatened the Lake Tahoe area as it burned for over two months earlier this year. They deny any wrongdoing.

Why it matters: The wildfire was the 15th-biggest ever recorded in California, razing more than 1,000 structures, forcing thousands to evacuate and injuring five people as it burned across nearly 222,000 acres of land in El Dorado, Amador and Alpine counties.

New Zealand aims to create smoke-free generation with tobacco ban

New Zealand officials announced Thursday legislative plans to outlaw smoking by making it illegal to sell or supply tobacco products to the next generation as part of a lifetime ban.

Why it matters: "People aged 14 when the law comes into effect will never be able to legally purchase tobacco," Associate Health Minister Ayesha Verrall said in a statement announcing the proposed law, part of the Smokefree 2025 Action Plan.
